Hypnotically repetitive clouds of sound evolve and ring in the instrument.
In Chicago I once shared a bill with a band who, at a run-of-the-mill rock club played a set in which their members sat around a turntable with a light wired to the middle and a shade with cutouts spinning to cast small bits of light on them. Each person had four handbells, two in each hand, and they’d ring one or the other by rotating their wrists so that one faced up. Everyone played pretty much all the time. It was awesome. That was the beginning of the seed of this piece.
